Note: The suite of prints comprises a title leaf and 18 etchings that depict the mock naval battle performed in Florence on the Arno river on Nov. 3, 1608, in celebration of the wedding of Cosimo II, Duke of Tuscany, to Maria Maddalena of Austria; The festival enacted the battle between the Argonauts and the armada of Colchis, while relating the love story of Jason, leader of the Argonauts, and Medea, daughter of the King of Colchis. The ships and floats were designed by Giulio Parigi, with the exception of two that were designed by Jacopo Ligozzi and one by Ludovico Cardi da Cigoli; The volume has an additional impression of Cigoli's Afione Argon. condotto da Mercurio (Bartsch 33).
