Note: The print is possibly an early state or version of the print titled Le thermomètre du sans culote, engraved by Laurent Guyot after a design by Armand Charles Caraffe (de Vinck, 4244-4245, Hennin, 11748); In a round medallion, a personification of France, a lily at her feet, is flanked by two figures, one holding a tablet of the Rights of man (Droits de l'homme), the other bringing light. Bats, signifying despots, are fleeing away; At the corners, there are four allegorical medallions: Phaethon riding a chariot, Ariadne giving Theseus a ball of thread, Duplicity and Hercules as symbols of false and true patriotisms; Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no.
