| Note: As a deputy to the Convention, Le Peletier voted for the death of Louis XVI during the king's trial. On the eve of the king's execution, he was assassinated by a former bodyguard and became the first martyr for the Revolution; The profile portrait bust of the French politician Louis-Michel Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau is set within an oval allegorical composition; Underneath a laurel tree, a female personification of Homeland (Patrie) crowns Le Peletier with a wreath of oak leaves. The bust rests on a pedestal at the foot of which are the shattered emblems of royalty; Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no. P980009*). | |
