Note: In May 1793, counterrevolutionaries overthrew the Jacobin municipal council of Lyon and emprisoned the mayor Chalier. Judged in a criminal trial and executed in July of that year, Chalier became the Revolution's third martyr for the cause of liberty. Inscription below the portrait: ... Je donne mon ame a l'Eternel mon cœur aux / Patriotes et mon corps aux brigands ... / Ce martir de la liberté déjà frappé du 1er coup insensible / à la douleur: Frappe dit il au boureau, et m'attache / vite une cocarde ; je meurs pour la Liberté; The three-quarter portrait bust of the French revolutionary Joseph Chalier, a leader of the Jacobins in Lyon, is set within an oval medallion that is enclosed within a rectangular frame decorated with horizontal lines; Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no.
