Note: The two guards may be Deshuttes and Varicourt, who were beheaded during the upheaval at Versailles on October 5-6, 1789; "Devenus par vos Trahisons les ennemis i(m)mortels de la Nation ..."--three-line inscription in the lower margin; Several victims of the early months of the French Revolution, the Marquis de Launay, Jacques de Flesselles, Foulon, Bertier de Sauvigny, and two guards, try to reach the Elysian Fields, each carrying his head on a pike; Charon sentences them instead to remain as shades on the banks of the river Styx, contrasting their fate to that of the baker Denis François, who embarks towards Elysium, welcomed by Jean Calas and other innocent victims; Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no.
