Note: On October 29, 1789, the National Assembly passed the "marc d'argent" decree as a condition of eligibility to the new Legislative Assembly, which required paying a tax equal to the silver mark and being a landowner; "Toi même, réponds-moi. Dans le siecle ou nous sommes. Est-ce au pié du savoir qu'on mesure les hommes. Boil. Sat. 8"--inscribed in the border of the oval medallion portrait; "Et souvent tel y vient qui sait pour tout secret / Cinq et quatre font neuf. ôtez deux, reste sept. Boil. Sat. 5"--in the lower margin; "Depuis deux ans, venu en France / Vous y brillés par la dépense / ..."--three columns of six-line verses in the lower margin; The satirical print is of a future legislator whose face is made of currency, the "marc d'argent" or silver mark.
