[Portrait of Henri de Lorraine, comte d'Harcourt, called Cadet à la perle] (engraving (print); Antoine Masson (French engraver, 1636-1700); Nicolas de Poil...; Published: 1667; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 1569-752; 547010; accession number: 2000.PR.47**)
Note: Title from exhibition catalog "Mignard d'Avignon (1606-1668)" (Avignon, Palais des Papes, 1979); Date from inscription on print; Four states are known of this print: one described by Duplessis, the other three by Robert-Dumesnil. This state, without number 4 in the margins, and before the re-work on the arch and at the top of the subject's head, is not mentioned by either bibliographer. Duplessis describes a similar state in the Dutuit collection, except for the address in the lower right corner, missing in this print: Masson fecit et excudit cum Priuil. Regis; A reproductive print after a lost painting by Nicolas Mignard of Henri de Lorraine, comte d'Harcourt, a distinguished French general who fought in the wars against Spain in Catalonia, Flanders, and Italy, as well as in Louis XIII's campaigns against the Huguenots. He was nicknamed "Cadet à la Perle" because he was the youngest of his family and because he wore a pearl hanging from his ear. The general is shown in three-quarter length, turned to the right but looking directly towards the viewer. He is wearing an armour cuirass over a richly embroidered doublet and a white shirt; a long, curled peruke reveals a pearl at his left ear, and descends in two long curls, decorated with bows, over a laced ruff. The ruff covers parts of the order of Saint-Esprit (cf. Robert-Dumesnil). A fringed sash, decoratively arranged around the general's waist, covers a sword of which only the ornate grip is visible. He holds a truncheon in his extended left arm. His right hand rests on a vambrace, which, together with a plumed helmet and gauntlet, lays on a cloth covered table to the right; In the background on the right, the artists' addresses are inscribed on an arch below the entablature: N. MIGNARD AVENI. PIN. ANTO. MASSON SCVLP. 1667. An ivy branch hangs from above. A scene resembling a military campaign, with tents and a burning fortress, appears in the background on the left. The print bears an inscription below the image, but within the plate mark, in verse and in elegant calligraphy, in three lines on both sides of the arms of the House of Lorraine: L'Honneur qu'il s'est acquis est sy grand et sy juste / Et l'on aura pour luy tant d'estime et d'Amour / Que comme les grands Roys prenent le nom d'Auguste / Les plus fameux heros prendront celuy d'Harcourt; Prominent French painter and engraver; famous for his engraved images of arms and armor, and wigs; also for his reproductive work after Le Brun, Titian, Rubens, and Pierre and Nicolas Mignard.
