Note: Title devised; Signed on plate, in the left and right corners below the image; State I according to Smith: before arms, inscription, and lettering on map, and the addresses of Reynolds and Watson in scratched letters. Smith provides details about four states. State I according to Russel: with the inscription area uncleaned. Russel follows Smith, and also distinguishes four various states of the inscription space. State I according to Le Blanc, who lists three states. Possibly one of the four proofs mentioned by O'Donoghue; A reproductive print by James Watson after Joshua Reynolds's portrait of Sir Jeffrey Amherst (1717-1797), an army commander who captured Canada for Great Britain during the French and Indian War (1758-1760); British engraver in mezzotint; best known for his work after Joshua Reynolds. Publication: 1766.
