[Portrait of Hans von Aachen] (print (visual work); Jan Saenredam (Dutch engraver and draftsman, 1565-1607); Published: 1605; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 1541-489; 521739; accession number: 2000.PR.45**)
Note: Title devised; Printer's address at the bottom of the architectural frame: J. Saenredam sculp. et excu. A., 1605; Third state according to Hollstein, who lists three states: the portrait alone (image size 13.2 x 10 cm.), i.e. without the frame; the second state with the portrait set within an architectural frame, image size 40.1 x 32.4 cm., dated 1601 at the end of the printer's address at the bottom of frame; and a third state identical to the second, with the date changed to 1605. The print consists of two parts: the oval portrait and a rectangular print with the image of the enclosing architectural frame; A reproductive print after a drawing by Pieter Isaacsz. According to Carel van Mander (Het Schilderboek, 1604), a painted self-portrait was sent by von Aachen to Isaacsz. As the portrait in the drawing by Isaacsz differs from that in the print, it seems reasonable to associate at least the portrait in the print with von Aachen's lost painting (cf. Kaufmann). Saenredam's print served for later images of the painter von Aachen (cf. Kaufmann); The print depicts a bust portrait of Hans von Aachen, who is shown turned to the left. The subject is enclosed in an oval scrollwork cartouche surrounded by an architectural frame. The entablature above the cartouche bears the Latin inscription: VIVIT POST FVNERA VIRTVS. Another Latin inscription within the frame of the cartouche attributes the drawing to von Aachen's pupil Isaacsz. Two allegorical figures stand, on either side of the portrait, above the base of the architectural frame. The figures are Hercules, on the left, wearing his lion skin and holding a golden apple from the Garden of Hesperides; and, on the right, the allegorical figure of Painting, holding a palette. Both raise one arm and grasp the long tresses of the goddess of Fortune, who sits above the entablature in the middle of a broken, scrolled pediment, balancing on a globe and waving a sail. A smaller round cartouche beneath the portrait, with a lion's head within the scrollwork on top, encloses a mythological scene with the figure of Hercules in the foreground. Festoons of palettes and other attributes of painting are suspended from the top of the entablature on both sides of the architectural frame; Dutch engraver and draftsman from the Mannerist School of Hendrik Goltzius, father of Pieter Jansz Saenredam (1597-1665); Library's print has a few pale stains in the image, a pale brown ink annotation in the lower right corner, and an old album sheet and paper hinge attached on verso. Publication: 1605.
