Note: The sitter has been identified as King Louis XVI of France who, in other portraits, is discribed as the first citizen of France (de Vinck); alternate identification has been Louis-Stanislas-Xavier, Comte de Provence (later Louis XVIII, King of France) (Renouvier); Dated 1789 in the Inventaire du fonds français; French printmaker and publisher in Paris, a student of Debucourt; The portrait bust in an oval medallion is set within a fleur-de-lys decorated frame, below which is a tablet inscribed: AU PREMIER CITOYEN. The sitter wears the insignia of the orders of the Holy Spirit and of the Golden Fleece; Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no. P980009*). Publication: [1789].
