Note: The inscription in the lower margin describes the main figure as "un monstre sous la forme humaine." This description was substituted in a later state with the name of Joseph Le Bon, a member of the National Convention, who implemented the policies of the Reign of Terror in France; Dated and signed in a later state: "Poirier de Dunkerque inventeur. Publié le 13 mai 1795."; Attributed to Jean-Baptiste-Marie Louvion, cf. French caricature, no. 152; The allegorical print shows a monster with human features who stands atop a pile of corpses between the guillotines of Arras and Cambrai, drinking blood from the beheaded victims. In the upper left, a winged figure announces the advent of Justice and Virtue with the 9 Thermidor to liberated prisoners; Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no.
