Note: "L. Aubert scripsit"; "Bertin sc."--inscribed on maps; A protégé of Charles-Nicolas Cochin, Monsaldy later became a prominent court engraver under the imperial rule of Napoleon; The print celebrates the military conquests of French generals during the Directory, giving emphasis to the triumph of Bonaparte; On the left, Hoche holds a small map of Quiberon in Brittany, the site of his defeat upon the British Royal Navy in July 1795. Pichegru and Moreau hold a map of the Northern front. Bonaparte carries the largest map, testimony to his conquests in Austria and Italy; Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no. P980009*).
