Note: A subsequent state of the print mentions the name of van Diepenbeeck in addition to that of Rubens, as the author of the drawing from which the print is derived (Antwerp, Stedelijk Prentenkabinet); Flemish engraver from Antwerp; The print announces the defense of Charles de La Vieuville's philosophy thesis, to be held at the College of Anchin in Douai on December 29, 1636 and presided over by the Jesuit Father Robertus de Vitry; Dedicated to Pope Urban VIII, the print displays a tablet inscribed with the philosophical positions of the defendant, who was abbot of the Monastery of St. Mary's of Savigny, near Avranches (Normandy). The upper half of the engraving simulates a tapestry that depicts the contest between Minerva and Neptune, before Juno and Jupiter, as told in Ovid's Metamorphoses; "59"--inscribed in pencil on mount.
