Note: Major Gothic cathedral which was constructed, beginning in 1386, on the site of an older church, Santa Maria Maggiore. The facade of the earlier church remained for centuries, with a new facade designed during the 17th century, though not completed until 1805. The cathedral utilized designers, engineers, masons, and architects from throughout Europe, and its decorative style has Germanic influences. This church is one of the largest in all of Europe, and took centuries to complete.
