[Festa della Porchetta in Bologna] (etching (print); Giovanni Antonio Belmond (Italian etcher, 1696-1775); Published: ca. 1735; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 550744; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002** (FF. 53))
Note: The celebration of the feast in 1735 was described in: Relazione della festa popolare della Porchetta avutasi in Bologna ... (Bologna : Lelio dalla Volpe, n.d.); According to Thieme-Becker and Le Blanc, Giovanni Antonio Belmond was born in 1696 in Troyes, Champagne (France). According to Bolaffi and Crespi (Felsina pittrice, III, 333), he was born in Fossano, south of Turin. Belmond was active in Bologna as well as in Turin, in the service of Carlo Emanuele III; The print depicts the festa della Porchetta or feast of the Roast Pig held in Bologna in 1735; The piglet is seen in the background in a horse-drawn chariot. Dressed as a lady, it is accompanied by a servant holding an umbrella over its head. Mounted knights abound on the piazza; some are blowing horns. Four horsemen carry banners with the partially legible names of Bologna's city gates: "Porta Stier[a]", "Porta Pi[e]ra". Two Cuccagna trees are displayed in the foreground, hung with fowls. While the knights proceed with dignity down the square, the populace, lured by the Cuccagna trees, is depicted fighting, to snatch the fowls, or in a state of extreme agitation, with upraised arms; Beyond the square enclosed by galleries, wide steps lead to a triumphal arch supported by spiral columns. To the left of the arch, a tempietto stands near the ruins of a tower overgrown with vegetation; The scene appears within a frame adorned with volutes, sprays of foliage, a cartouche, as well as with the insignia of the Gonfaloniere and eight Anziani; Trimmed within plate mark and glued to mount annotated in ink: Festa della porchetta dell'anno / Anto. Belmonto Turinese Scolare del Cav. Giusep. Ma. Crespi, al dire del Can:co; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).
