Note: In the lower part of the plate are listed the inscriptions that adorned the catafalque. The Sicilian printmaker Francesco Faraone Aquila from Palermo was active in Rome from 1690 to 1740, collaborating with the publisher Domenico de' Rossi. He created prints recording the catafalques of several popes and dignitaries. The print shows an elevation and a half plan of the catafalque designed by Filippo Barigioni for the obsequies at St. Peter's in Rome of Pope Clement XI, who died on 19 March 1721. The ephemeral architectural structure contains in its center a casket that supports a truncated pyramid adorned with a papal portrait medallion. It is crowned by a tiara resting on doubled cushions. Columns encircled by spiral candleholders are placed at the four corners of the structure; Trimmed within plate mark and glued to mount annotated in brown ink: 92 / 67 / Bargione; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**). Publication: [Rome]: Nella stamp.a di Domenico de Rossi erede di Gio. Giacomo in Roma alla Pace ..., [ca. 1721]. Catholic Church, Pope (1700-1721 : Clement XI). | |
