D. Isabella Clara Evgenia, Hispaniarvm infans, &c (engraving (print); Pontius, Paulus (1603-1658), after Peter Paul Rubens; published 17th century; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 543892; accession number: 2000.PR.41**)
Note: Title from inscription engraved above the image; statements of responsibility are engraved in the lower corners of the image: Pontius on the right side, Rubens on the left side; in the lower left margin is engraved "Cum Priuilegÿs". Isabella, Infanta of Spain and Archduchess of Austria, 1566-1633, ruled the Spanish Netherlands with her husband, Archduke Albert, from 1598 to 1621. After Albert's death in 1621 sovereignty of the Spanish Netherlands reverted to Spain, and Isabella ruled as governor of the country for her nephew, King Philip IV of Spain. After the death of her consort, she joined the Third Order of St. Francis, and for the rest of her life wore the habit of a Poor Clare in sign of mourning. Peter Paul Rubens' depiction of Isabella as a Poor Clare became the official state portrait until her death. There are several extant versions of the portrait (cf. Rubens e l'incisione). Rubens painted the portrait shortly after the capture of Breda in June 1625, when the Infanta was received as victor in Antwerp. It is also known that she visited Rubens' house on July 10, 1625, possibly in connection with the portrait (cf. Vliege, 112); The poem by Gevaerts is printed on eight lines and reads: "Caesaribus proauis et magno nata Philippo Evgenia, ... À radijs sperat, Clara Isabella, tuis."; Hollstein lists only one state of this print; Dutuit lists two states; Wurzbach mentions a state with an inscription reading: "O Clara, quae prognata Claro ..." Voorhelm Schneevoogt lists several portraits of Isabella engraved after Rubens by various artists, including this one; A reproductive print after Peter Paul Rubens. The knee-length portrait of the Infanta is reproduced by Paulus Pontius in a frame and surrounded by emblematic ornaments which are not present in the paintings by Peter Paul Rubens (cf. Vliege, ill. 129-130, 132). Two angels are seen lifting up a veil by which the portrait was covered, they also hold a wreath of oak-leaves just over Isabella's head. Above it is the all-seeing eye of Providence, surmounted by the inscription PROVIDENTIA AVGVSTA and with the words VT SERVES VINCIS beneath. Below the frame is a broad cartouche with Latin text composed by Jean-Gaspard Gevaerts, glorifying Isabella's victory over Breda, signed "C. Geuartius lud." The cartouche is flanked by a torch and an oar around which is entwined a snake with a palm in its mouth. Disposed decoratively at the sides of the frame are cornucopias filled with fruits of the earth. Isabella, portrayed in the habit of a Poor Clare, is seen standing and turned slightly to the left, looking towards the spectator and clasping her veil in her hands. A light radiates from the eye of Providence surrounding her head with an aura. The composition is ascribed to Rubens in Hermanus Hugo "Obsidio Bredana" of 1626; however, the emblemetic ornaments might have been suggested to Rubens by Gevaerts (cf. Vliege 112); The Flemish engraver Paulus Pontius, also called Paulus Du Pont (cf. Bie), was born in Antwerp in 1603 and died also in Antwerp in 1658. He was a prominent reproductive engraver after Peter Paul Rubens, Antonius van Dyck and other Flemish artists.
