Note: Title from caption in lower margin of plate; Louis Guillaume Pécourt (1653-1729) was a famous French dancer and choreographer at the court of Louis XIV; he also was appointed as ballet teacher of the Duchess of Burgundy Marie Adélaïde of Savoy (1685-1712) when the Duchess was twelve years old and remained in this position until the Duchess's death; Louis Guillaume's brother, Louis Alexandre (1656-1743), was also a dancer (cf. Jal); Along with François de Troy, Hyacinthe Rigaud and Nicolas de Largillière, Robert Levrac-Tournières is considered one of the best French portrait painters of his time (cf. Thieme-Becker). His portrait painting of Pécourt is missing and known only in the engraved version by Chéreau; the original painting was last shown at the Salon of 1704 (cf. Dimier); Marcel Roux describes two states of this print: one without an imprint statement and one with Chéreau's widow in the imprint statement at the bottom. The print is also listed by Le Blanc and by Portalis and Béraldi; A reproductive print after Robert Levrac-Tournières. Half-length portrait of Pécourt, turned to the left, with both arms leaning on a wall or railing, the right hand resting on an open book of dance notations; wearing stage clothes or a gala costume and a feather-decorated hat similar to a beret; François Chéreau The Elder (1680-1729) was born in Blois and died in Paris. Founder of the well known French family of artists, printers and art dealers, he was named Graveur du Cabinet du Roi and became a renowned and prolific portrait engraver under Louis XIV.
