Kaÿserliches Vermählungs-Fest (etching (print); Hofmann, Johann Jacob (engraver); published ca. 1666; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 132877; accession number: 2000.PR.55**)
Note: The print shows a group portrait commemorating the ceremony of Leopold I's first marriage to Margarita Teresa, the daughter of Philip IV of Spain. The imperial couple stands in front of a large group of people, facing the viewer. Standing between them, a bishop joins their hands in matrimony. Behind Leopold is a female figure, possibly the Emperor's mother Maria, daughter of Philip III of Spain. Behind the bride is her mother Maria Anna of Austria and a young boy, possibly Margarita Teresa's brother Charles II of Spain (1661-1700). The imperial couple, the bishop, the two female figures and the boy stand on a raised platform, which is covered with flowers and inscribed in its base: "Infantin, hochgeborn der Himmel gibt Euch [...] Und Ihr bleibt grosser Held mein Kaÿser für und für"; Above the figures two medallions enclose scenes from the bride's journey: the arrival of the bridal procession in the cathedral, and the bride's departure from home. The inscriptions within the frames of the medallions: "So! Lebe in Frieden du Löblichter Kajser", and: "So! Lebet beglueket Der bundene Käuser!". Between the medallions a scrolled band is inscribed: "Leb vergnüget Leopold!" "Gott und Menschen sind dir Hold." Above the medallions, a large eagle sits on a bar connecting the medallions, spreading its wings and holding a sprig of laurel in its beak. Above the eagle, two angels support a laurel crown and hold a coat of arms. Next to each of the coats of arms, a scrolled band is inscribed: "Österreich, zur freüd dich schier", and: "Spanien, auf wünsch Glück." Above the laurel crown, the eye of God appears through an opening in the clouds. Published; ca. 1666.
