Record Type: Movable Work
Images: 1 2 3
Red Disaster (painting (visual work); Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987); 1963, 1985; Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, Suffolk county, Massachusetts, ...; 1986.161a-b)
Note: In 1962 Warhol began reproducing newspaper images in a series of paintings he called Death and Disasters. The images include car wrecks, plane crashes, and, as here, an electric chair. But the series is not about violence so much as the power of the media and the way that, as Warhol said, “when you see a gruesome picture over and over again, it really doesn’t have any effect.”
