Note: According to Charles-Antoine Jombert, the print was etched by Charles-Nicolas Cochin in 1735, and completed by the engraving process by his mother Louise-Magdeleine Hortemels in 1736 (cf. Jombert, C.-A. Catalogue de l'oeuvre de Ch. Nic. Cochin fils, Paris : De l'imprimerie de Prault, 1770, no. 24). The print was announced in October 1737 in the Mercure de France; Title from: Roux; The print shows the preparations in Piazza Navona in Rome for the fireworks display commissioned by Cardinal Melchior de Polignac and held on 30 November 1729 in honor of the birth of the dauphin Louis, son of King Louis XV of France and Marie Leszczyńska; Derived from a drawing by Jacques Dumont Le Romain, the etching is based on a veduta painted by Giovanni Paolo Panini (The National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, no. 95) that records the ephemeral arches and other festival decorations designed by Pier Leone Ghezzi; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).
