The carte-de-visite, an inexpensive mounted albumen print the size of a calling card, was invented by André Adolphe Eugène Disdéri in 1854. Cartes were most popular in Europe in the 1860s and 1870s, when collecting and trading them became a popular pastime; outside Western Europe, the genre continued to be produced into the early 20th century.Notes: Collection assembled by repository.
