Listed in this French-language set are records of public sales of paintings in France during the first decade of the nineteenth-century. Included are more than twenty-one thousand paintings from 283 documented sales during the period, rendering a rich and detailed view of the state of collecting and the tastes in France during the Napoleonic period. Numerous collectors and dealers active in France during this period are identified here for the first time. In addition, a detailed introduction and commentary on each of the auctions along with the index of paintings by artist makes this a valuable resource for academic and art research libraries, museums, dealers, auction houses, and scholars.
Burton Fredericksen is former director of the Getty Provenance Index. He edited The Index of Paintings Sold in the British Isles during the Nineteenth Century. Benjamin Peronnet is on the staff of the Getty Provenance Index and authored the exhibition catalogue Dessins italiens du Musée Condé à Chantilly, II, Raphaël et son cercle. This publication was produced by the Getty Provenance Index.
