Dipoinos (Greek sculptor, active 6th century BCE)
|
Note: Dipoinos and his brother Skyllis were early 6th-century BCE sculptors from Crete and active in the Peloponnese ca. 580 BCE. They emigrated from Crete to Sikyon. They are described as the students of the legendary Daidalos or his sons by a woman of Gortyn. The two brothers were supposedly the first sculptors to make important works in marble and to use Parian marble. In Sikyon they made statues of Apollo, Artemis Mounychia, Herakles, and Athena. They also made an Athena at Kleonai, ebony statues of the Dioskouroi at Argos, and a Herakles at Tiryns. The Byzantine chronicler George Kedrenos (Cedrenus) reported that their green stone statue of Lindian Athena was in the palace of Lausos in Constantinople and may be the statue sent to Kleoboulos of Rhodes by Amasis of Egypt. |
