Kleophon Painter (Attic vase painter, active ca. 420-390 BCE)
|
Note: A red-figure vase painter associated with the late group of Polygnotos. He was a contemporary of the Eretria Painter. The Classical style epitomized by the sculptures of the Parthenon, which was being completed during the Kleophon Painter's career, influenced his figural compositions and treatment of drapery. Like Polygnotos, he specialized in the decoration of large vases, on which he usually depicted aspects of Athenian daily life. He takes his named from a kalos inscription on a stamnos in St. Petersburg. |
