Baldi / Notebook of designs in architecture and decorative arts

While the Getty Research Institute's Department of Architecture and Design is only one year old, the subjects of architecture and design have been essential to the Research Institute's collecting policy since its earliest years. The drawings, photographs, rare books, and models documenting the history of architectural, industrial, and other design within the special collections of the Research Library enable a wide variety of critical perspectives. Wim de Wit, the department's head, will discuss collecting priorities as he illustrates the depth of the collection by surveying significant examples and recent research projects.

Wim de Wit has held appointments at the Nederlands Architectuurinstituut in Amsterdam, the Cooper- Hewitt Museum in New York City, and the Chicago Historical Society. He has organized a number of exhibitions while at the Getty, including Shaping the Great City: Modern Architecture in Central Europe, 1890–1937 (2001), Julius Shulman, Modernity and the Metropolis (2005), and Lessons from Bernard Rudofsky (2008).
