During the 1988/1989 year scholars focused on the
distinctive qualities of cultural products selected for
historical analysis or the ways in which scholarly
interpretations are linked to particular methodological
and theoretical assumptions. Many stressed close
observation of cultural customs, traditions, and patterns
of production. Others examined disciplinary practices and
their interpretive strategies. Vital contributions were
made toward fashioning interdisciplinary approaches for
analyzing cultural continuities and changes. This group
of scholars was drawn from the fields of anthropology,
ethnography, the history of art, social history, and
sociology.
