The Upcoming Year at the Getty Museum

Museum director Timothy Potts discusses the major reinstallation of the Getty Villa's collection along chronological, rather than thematic, lines; the recent acquisition of an opulent 17th-century Italian cabinet; and looks forward to the opening of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA in September, the Getty's ambitious region-wide exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles.

Hovering Between Painting and Drawing

The Museum's drawings department welcomes a new associate curator, Emily Beeny. She discusses the scope of her first upcoming installation, The Birth of Pastels, which focuses on the evolution of how sumptuous pastel "painting" emerged from colored chalk drawing, during the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Including works by Degas, Rosalba Carriera, and Odlin Redon, the installation opens in June at the Getty Center.

What Is a Bestiary?

Manuscripts curator Elizabeth Morrison recently explored the fascinating world of medieval bestiaries with an international audience on Facebook Live. Bestiaries were a beloved type of encyclopedic manuscript in which animals (real and imaginary) were cleverly used to illustrate Christian themes. Marina Abramovic

Celebrated performance artist Marina Abramovic visited the Getty to give a talk on the arc of her provocative avant-garde career, from endurance-based works in the 1970s to her incredibly popular work The Artist is Present at MoMA. She discussed her art, and her recent memoir, Walk Through Walls, with author and comedian Sandra Tsing Loh.
