Newly Acquired

Georges Seurat's Indian Ascetic (about 1878–79) signifies the beginning of the artist's obsession with the effects of light and darkness that characterizes his later paintings and drawings. Made when Seurat was about 20 years old, this work employs gradations of shadow to define the form and mood of his subject. On view at the Getty Center beginning June 3 through August 24, 2014.

Designing Victoria: Visual Sources for Historical Costume

Costume designer Sandy Powell has won Academy Awards for her work in Shakespeare in Love (1999), The Aviator (2005), and The Young Victoria (2010). On Sunday, April 27, she speaks with Deborah Nadoolman Landis, director of the David. C. Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design at UCLA, on the role of photographs and other visual sources in costume design, including works in the exhibition A Royal Passion: Queen Victoria and Photography.
