Teachers come together in small groups at the Getty to advance thinking about their own goals and strategies for classroom teaching. Our programs support the national and California state content standards for grades K–12. The following are some of the programs offered on a regular basis. The curricula for intermediate and intermediate/advanced ESL students provide lessons that help ESL teachers use works of art to enrich their English language acquisition curriculum.

Teachers' Open Workshops
Location: The Getty Center
In these one-day workshops held on Saturdays, K–12 teachers are immersed in one aspect of the Getty Museum's permanent collection while learning specific ways to incorporate works of art into their classroom teaching. The program includes a lecture, small group discussions, and hands-on art-making activities. Each workshop is accompanied by a set of lessons, which is made available on this Web site.

Wednesday Teacher Workshops
Location: The Getty Villa
These free, two-hour workshops offer the opportunity for teachers, working in small groups, to learn about specific topics related to the Getty Villa's collection and special exhibitions. You'll learn how to create successful self-guided lesson plans and gallery activities by connecting content standards to works of art in the Villa's thematic galleries, plus techniques for teaching with original objects in the museum setting.

Art & Language Arts
Location: The Getty Center
This free one-year program introduces K–5 teachers to meaningful and engaging strategies for developing students' skills in language and visual arts. Working in grade-level teams, teachers develop lesson plans built around works of art in the Getty Museum's collection. Participants are eligible for LAUSD salary points or USC Continuing Education Units. Applications for the 2010–2011 class will be available in Spring 2010.

Villa Summer Institute
Location: The Getty Villa
This intensive, four-day workshop is offered to K–12 teachers every year. Participants investigate how objects in the Getty Museum's collection connect to history, culture, geography, architecture, and archaeology. The schedule includes presentations by curators and scholars, activities in the galleries that connect to Visual Art and History—Social Science standards, and opportunities for professional exchange.

Secondary Teachers' Institute
Location: The Getty Center
This annual three-and-a-half day program introduces secondary-level teachers of literature, social sciences, and other humanities-based disciplines to art and artists from the Getty Museum's collection.

Language through Art: ESL Curricula
Locations: The Getty Center and in your ESL classroom
Through this program, Getty Education Staff lead workshops at either the Getty Center or in classrooms of ESL teachers from selected adult schools in the Los Angeles area. Participants will receive materials and guidance on how to use the Getty's ESL curricula in their classrooms. The curricula for beginning and intermediate ESL students provide lessons that help ESL teachers use works of art to enrich their English language acquisition curriculum.
