Langenheim, W. & F. (American photography studio, 1840-1874)
|
Note: In 1840, the Langenheim brothers, William and Frederick, opened a daguerreotype studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1845, the brothers produced the first daguerreotypes of Niagara Falls, New York. In 1849, the Langenheims adopted the negative on glass process invented by Niépce de Saint-Victor. This process, which produced lantern slides, was renamed "hyalotype" by the Langenheims. It was also in this year that the brothers purchased the U.S. patent for the talbotype from William Henry Fox Talbot, though they were unsuccessful in selling the rights to American photographers. In 1850, the Langenheims were among the first photographers to introduce stereoscopy to the United States. They were also the first American producers and retailers of stereocards. |
