Alvarado, Pedro de (Spanish conquistador, 1485-1541)

Note: Spanish conquistador who participated in the Conquest of the Mexihcah in Central Mexico. In 1520, while Hernán Cortés was absent, he instigated the Toxcatl massacre. He also led the Conquest of the Maya region in 1523. Named governor of Guatemala in 1527. In the Anales of Tlatelolco, he is referred to as "Tonatiuh" or "Sun God" because of his blonde hair.
