Harrington, Oliver Wendell (American painter, illustrator, and cartoonist, 1912-1995)
|
Note: Political cartoonist Oliver W. Harrington was born in Valhalla, New York. Harrington was trained at the National Academy of Design and earned a BFA from Yale University's School of the Fine Arts in 1940. Langston Hughes served as one of Harrington's most influential mentors while both men were in Harlem. After a successful career as an editorial cartoonist and illustrator, Harrington was forced to flee the United States in 1951 to escape persecution for his civil rights activism. Harrington went to Paris, and worked for American newspapers via mail. Then, in 1961 he was trapped in East Berlin when the wall went up. Harrington worked as an illustator for several of East Berlin's magazines for the rest of his life. |
