Bak Jega (Korean painter, calligrapher, 1750-1805)
|
Note: Bak Jega was a calligrapher and painter who served as a civil official during the late Joseon period. During his visits to Qing China, he used poetry, calligraphy, and painting to bond with artists and literary scholars, including Luo Pin (1733-1799), one of the painters called the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou," and Weng Fanggang (1733-1818), who was celebrated for calligraphy. Given how Bak's exchanges with Chinese artists and literary scholars impacted Kim Jeonghui (1786-1856), Bak is believed to have been Kim's teacher. He is also considered to have played a key role in the formation of Kim's Chusa style. Most paintings by Bak use simple brushwork and a wet-on-wet technique that adds clear and light but saturated pigments to a wet surface, showing a typical literati ink-and-wash painting style. |
