Record Type: Person
Kim Jeonghui (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1786-1856)

Note: Kim Jeonghui was a renowned literati painter, calligrapher, and epigraphist from the late Joseon Dynasty. He emphasized the convergence of poetry, calligraphy, and painting and the traditional concepts of the calligraphic spirit (munja hyang) and scholarly spirit (seogweon gi) in his calligraphic works. The most famous figure in the history of Korean calligraphy, Kim developed a distinctive style known as "chusache". He was also famed for ink-and-wash landscape paintings and ink orchid paintings that embodied a literary spirit and drew upon his distinct calligraphic style. The art and thinking of Kim Jeonghui exerted an influence on middle-class calligraphers and painters such as Jo Huiryong and Heo Ryeon and on royal family members and high-ranking officials, including Yi Haeung (Great Regent Heungseon) and Gwon Donin.
