Burford, Byron Leslie (American painter and printmaker, 1920-2011)
|
Note: Byron Burford was born July 12, 1920, in Jackson, Mississippi. He studied with Grant Wood at the University of Iowa earning a BFA in 1942. He returned to the University after serving in the U.S. Air Force in World War II and in 1947 received his MFA. Upon graduating he was appointed to the faculty in the Art Department and taught painting until 1986 when he was named professor emeritus. Burford did additional teaching at the University of Minnesota, California College of Arts and Crafts, and the Joslyn Museum. His paintings and prints can be found in the collections of museums and institutions such as the Walker Art Center, Guggenheim, High Museum of Art, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum. Subject matter of Burford's works includes circuses, military, industry and sports. |
