Gausta, Herbjørn (American painter, 1854-1924, born in Norway)

Note: Herbjørn Gausta was born on the Gausta farm in Vestfjørddalen, Telemark, Norway, June 16, 1854. In 1867 he emigrated to a farm near Harmony, Minnesota, with his family. He was educated at Luther College (BA 1875), Knud Bergslien's Academy of Art in Oslo, and the Munich Academy of Art. Gausta based his studio in Minneapolis, living there from 1888 until his death where he supported himself painting portraits of prominent Norwegian-Americans, 400 altarpieces for churches, landscapes and genre paintings. He is buried in Harmony, Minnesota. |
