Long, Will West (Cherokee carver, 1869-1946; Eastern Band)
|
Note: Will West Long was a master woodcarver and a major figure in the preservation and revival of various Cherokee artforms and customs. Long worked extensively with anthropologists such as James Mooney and Franz Olbrecht, but most famously with Frank G. Speck (1881-1950) from the University of Pennsylvania, documenting Cherokee masks, songs, and dances. Long also taught Cherokee language classes and was a founding member of the Cherokee Indian Fair, one of the first major Native arts fairs in the state. |
