Morgan, Gertrude (American painter and naive artist, 1900-1980)
|
Note: A nun, gospel musician, and religious folk artist, Sister Gertrude Morgan left school after the third grade to work on her southern family's farm. In her thirties, Morgan had a religious revelation and began an orphanage with other missionary women. Then, after a second revelation, she began to draw and paint. Text and the icon of Christ were heavily featured in her artworks, and Morgan continued creating art until 1974, when "God had instructed her to stop making art." |
