Astbury, John (British potter, 1686-1743)
|
Note: Astbury was a notable Staffordshire potter. He is said to have learnt the technique of making red stoneware from the Elers brothers but he is best known for his lead-glazed earthenware, particularly his brown vessels decorated with reliefs stamped from pads of white clay and applied to the surface. These pieces are more refined than most earlier Staffordshire pottery but still distinctly rustic. Astbury also produced statuettes typically modelled in two or more types of clay of contrasting colors. More of his wares are unmarked but some of ca. 1760-1780 are impressed with 'ASTBURY.' |
