Shin Yunbok (Korean painter and court artist, ca. 1758-after 1813)
|
Note: Known for depictions of courtesans and scenes of everyday life. Shin Yunbok, who was also known as Shin Gawon, served as a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) in the late Joseon period. He was a descendent of Shin Malju (1439-?) and a son of the court painter Shin Hanpyeong (ca. 1726-after1809). Along with Kim Hongdo (1745-after 1806) and Kim Deuksin (1754-1822), Shin is considered one of the three greatest Korean genre painters. He was skilled at depicting love scenes, and numerous erotic paintings have been attributed to him. However, he also worked on a wide range of other themes, including landscape paintings in the literati style of the Southern School of Painting and realistic and lyrical bird-and-animal paintings. The poems that he wrote on his works show his elegant calligraphic style and his talent for literature. Shin's genre paintings are significant in that they realistically convey the atmosphere of the early nineteenth century. |
