Jeongjo, King of Joseon, Korea (Korean ruler and artist, 1752-1800)
|
Note: The twenty-second king of Joseon dynasty. He established a royal research institute called Kyujanggak. He rejected extravagance, embraced scholarship, and practiced painting and calligraphy. King Jeongjo, the twenty-second sovereign (r. 1776–1800) of the Joseon Dynasty, was also a calligrapher and painter. He took deep interest in and displayed talent in calligraphy and painting. He established the system of painters-in-waiting (chabi daeryeong hwawon), ordered them to produce various paintings and diagrams for the royal protocols (uigwe), and had them paint his portrait on three occasions. He even engraved his own seals. He often produced Four Gentlemen paintings and ink-and-wash works in the style of the Southern School of Painting. He also produced a vast body of calligraphic works. His regular script was influenced by Wang Xizhi’s early calligraphic style and the style of Han Ho (1543–1605). His running script was impacted by the styles of Wang Xizhi and Mi Fu but also showed a connection to calligraphy by Zhao Mengfu and Grand Prince Anpyeong. |
