Coffin-Chevallier, Josephine (French painter, actress, and collector, 1825-1874)
|
Note: Coffin-Chevallier and her husband, John Bowes, founded a museum in Barnard Castle in Durham, ca. 1860; they commissioned Jules Pellechet to design a French Renaissance-style building to house their Second Empire furniture and paintings and their large collections of porcelain, faience, embroideries, tapestries, clocks, and objects d'art. Their collection included El Greco's "Tears of St. Peter" which Bowes bought in 1869 for eight pounds. The couple also collected paintings from contemporary French artists (e.g. Courbet), with whom Josephine had exhibited in the salons of 1867 to 1870. |
