Jōsetsu (Japanese painter and Zen monk, active 1405-1423)
|
Note: Japanese painter and Zen monk whose name means "clumsy-like," given to him by Zen abbot Zekkai Chūshin (1336-1405), who took it from the Chinese phrase "the greatest skill is like clumsiness", an aphorism from the Chinese Daoist classic, Daode jing. Little biographical information is known on Josetsu, and fame is derived from only one painting in ink and light colors on paper, "Catching a Catfish with a Gourd," (ca. 1413). |
