Maler, Tobert (German architect and photographer, 1842-1917, active in Mexico)
|
Note: Maler was a German architect who later adopted Austrian citizenship. He arrived in Mexico as a member of the Austrian army during the French Intervention and stayed after the fall of the Empire, traveling throughout the country. His earliest photographs were of indigenous people, but moving to the Yucatán in 1885, he focused on studying Mayan ruins. The Peabody Museum of Harvard financed his archaeological studies in 1897, 1899-1900 and 1904-1905. He died in poverty in Mexico in 1917. |
