Hampton, James (American sculptor, 1909-1964)
|
Note: Not much is known about James Hampton's artistic history. Born in Elloree, South Carolina, Hampton was a fundamentalist Bapstist. He moved to Washington, D.C. in 1928 and reportedly experienced "visitations from God" starting around 1931. Hampton was drafted into the Army during the second World War in 1942, then returned to D.C. in 1945. There, he found employment as a janitor in the General Services Administration. Hampton's best-known work was "The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations Millenium General Assembly," and is presumed to be a testament to his religion. Hamptons worked on this piece in 1945-1950 and continued until his death from cancer in 1964. |
