Sklenář, Zdeněk (Czech painter and printmaker, born 1910)
|
Note: Student at the School of Applied Arts, Prague, where he studied with Arnost Hafbauer and Zdenek Kratochvil from 1929 to 1937. He served as assistant professor there from 1945 to 1950. The first exhibition of his work was mounted in Prague, 1940. In 1943 he became a member of the Mánes Union of Artists, and exhibited widely in the years thereafter throughout Europe and the world. He was influenced by Surrealism and painted amorphous shapes and calligraphic symbols. In 1955 he traveled to China, which was to have a profound impact on his life and work. He was at the center of the "Prague Spring," the liberalization of Stalinist dogma realized under Dubček. |
