Note: John Wehrle (1941 - ), born in San Antonio, Texas, received his B.A. from Texas Tech and his M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in New York. He served in Vietnam as a combat artist, executing works that are now in the Smithsonian's Army Historical Division. In 1973, he spent a year in Montana, where he decided to become a muralist. He lived in Los Angeles between 1977-79 and executed the mural "Fall of Icarus" on Market Street in Venice, which depicts a lone cowboy surrounded by a desert landscape looking at an astronaut appearing as an apparition on a drive-in movie screen. In 1986, he executed a mural for the Kate Mantilini restaurant in Beverly Hills under a commission from the prominent local architectural firm Morphosis. Wehrle currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area where he is both a muralist and a studio painter.
