Stanley, William Ford Robinson (English instrument maker and author, 1829-1909)

Note: Born 2 February 1829; died 14 August 1909. William Ford Robinson Stanley first set up business for himself in 1854, and began a career inventing scientific instruments, however the name W. F. Stanley & Co. doesn't appear until 1900, according to the Dictionary of National Biography. Over time, Stanley invented an affordable "Panoptic Stereoscope," various improved surveying instruments, a meteronometer for measuring wind direction, and the steel-wire bicycle tire, among others, until his death in 1909. The firm dissolved in 1960.
