Grue, Francesco Antonio Xaverio (Italian potter and maiolica painter, 1686-1746)
|
Note: Francesco came from a famous family of maiolica potters and painters from Castelli in Abruzzo. In 1716, after graduating in philosophy and theology in Urbino (1706) and travelling to Rome and L'Aquila, he went to Naples (ca. 1709), where he began to concentrate on ceramics. He decorated plates, albarelli, and shields in the style of wares from his home town of Castelli. His considerable output had a noteworthy impact on contemporary Neapolitan ceramics. One of his most notable works is the series of albarelli for the apothecaries of the sanctuary of the S. Casa in Loreto and of the monastery of S. Martino in Naples. Wares were often Baroque in style and included shields decorated with mythological themes, and plates decorated with landscapes or putti in the center and tendril or festoon borders. Francesco's works were also often signed and dated. In 1736 he returned to Castelli where he worked until his death. |
